Aquarium hosts plastics in oceans exhibit

  • Date: 26-August-2011
  • San Francisco’s Aquarium of the Bay has opened a new exhibit to address plastic waste in the Earth’s oceans.

“Perils of Plastics” is a temporary multimedia exhibition that combines playful features with hard-hitting facts and a do-it-yourself element to raise awareness and personal action, according to the aquarium.

One of the exhibit’s programs will show the effects plastic pollution has on an albatross, one of the world’s largest sea birds, by dissecting the insides of their stomachs.

The aquarium is removing all plastic drinking bottles from the retail areas of its facility, which sees up to 600,000 visitors a year. There will be a water station where people can fill up their own bottles and the machine calculates the number of plastic bottles saved.

The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 5.
